A team of explorers, inventors, and doers

Andy Youmans

Andy joined his family’s manufacturing business, Connecticut Spring (CSS), in 1989. While VP of Operations at CSS, he began a multi-year investigation into the Toyota Production System (TPS). Having recently graduated from Harvard Business School (HBS), he quickly realized that there was more behind Toyota’s perennial operational excellence than he had been taught or that had been deeply understood by “experts”. He therefore sought to foster a relationship between HBS and the Toyota Supplier Support Center (TSSC) to get help with further investigation and insight. In 1996, HBS published groundbreaking materials on the subject. In response to growing interest in TPS generated from those materials, and with the blessing of the TSSC, Andy left his family’s business to start an operations management-consulting firm, Yomo Consulting. Ever since, Andy has been working with companies, large and small and located around the world implementingTPS. Andy’s business partner in Yomo is Hajime Oba, former founder and general manager of TSSC. Oba-san continues to be recognized as one of the world’s premier thinkers and practitioners of TPS. With decades of practical experience in hand, Andy created a second-year MBA class on embedding Toyota philosophy and principles in teams and companies to generate high performance cultures. He taught the class at Stanford Graduate School of Business in 2015 – 2016. Most recently, Andy has sought out and invested in companies which were positioned to benefit from his practical and unique experience. He currently maintains a small portfolio of companies while continuing to work on select consulting projects for Yomo. Andy earned his MBA from HBS in 1992, and his BA from Dartmouth College in 1987.
