Automatic Guided Vehicles (AGVs) and mobile robot OEMs and systems integrators have resorted to building workarounds to cope with the limitations of current navigation approaches.

GPS is not reliable for indoor environments and offers limited accuracy outdoors. Tape and inductive RFID, are inflexible once installed and not aligned with industry trends towards flexible production lines. LiDAR is expensive, requires time-consuming map generation and maintenance, and degrades in ambient light and outdoor conditions.  It is also ill-suited for unstructured or dynamic environments due to the lack of consistent visual features for the system to recognize.  Many LiDAR systems also cannot tolerate floor height changes. Ramps, slopes, and bumps can appear as walls or barriers.
